An Old Painting Got a New Life ✨ How Glazing and Color Magic Changed Everything
What do you do with an old practice painting that’s been forgotten and feels a bit too cold in its colors?
You definitely don’t throw it away!
I decided to dust off my oil paints and bring out my secret weapon: glazing.
I’ve been getting some fresh inspiration and new techniques from Milan Art online courses and one of the coolest breakthroughs on the course has been diving deeper into color theory and experiencing those total 'aha!' moments.
It truly shows you how the smallest color adjustments can bring an entire painting to life.
An oil painting of a flower bouquet before glazing.
A large red flower is in the center with flat tones and slightly cool undertones.
The magic in this project happened through glazing.
The idea is simple yet brilliant: you mix a generous amount of medium into the paint, turning the color into something like stained glass. When you apply this thin veil over the old dry paint, the underlying layer shines through, and the light starts to bounce back in a whole new way. The result is a level of depth and three-dimensionality that you just can’t get with thick, opaque painting alone.
I wanted to balance the coolness of the background and bring some serious warmth and contrast to the bouquet.

Shining on my palette this time: Alizarin Crimson, Magenta, Cadmium Yellow Deep Hue, Permanent Orange, and Raw Umber for that natural touch. 🎨
The difference is incredible!
That giant red flower in the center practically caught fire and started glowing once I swept a thin veil of warm yellow over its center. At the same time, the blue flower and those cute little ball-shaped buds found their place in the bouquet as they received hints of warm purple and orange glow.
The final details are still missing, but this is sooooo exciting to build on!
