Artistic Freedom

Sometimes a painting starts to feel too careful.

The flowers in this mixed media piece were there, but they still felt too pale and hesitant.
I could have kept adjusting them slowly with a brush, but the process was starting to feel heavy.

With thick acrylic paint, I started shaping the flowers more freely. The colors spread, mixed, slipped, and created petal-like textures I would never have made on purpose with a brush.

Suddenly the painting felt alive again.

This is one of the things I love about mixed media.

There is no single correct tool.

A spoon can become a brush.

A mistake can become a new layer.

A tired painting can begin to bloom again.

Later, I will finish these flowers with oil paint, adding more depth, glow, and softness.

But this playful stage gave them the energy they needed.

Sometimes artistic freedom begins with putting the brush down.
